The texture you see is an interaction between the colored chips and cane and clear glass, and a (secret) substance we roll the glass in before picking up the color, which changes the surface area of the glass and gives it the extreme shine, halos around the individual pieces in the color, and the golden/yellow sheen you see.
They remind me of a pair of 'witch balls' that I used to have... lovely glass like that, but with an open top and a cork to put in it. That way you could fill them with odds'n'ends of good juju and then hang them in the light.
We've made a few 'witch balls' that are like round open mouthed fish, with fins and stuff on the sides. When we were kids we filled them with hair and hung them over our beds. I still have one in my kitchen
